'Pokie' Alsip, Popular Barber, Dies Suddenly

Ira B. “Pokie” Alsip, 71 years old, one of the most widely known and popular citizen of this community and proprietor of “Pokie's Barber Shop”, died unexpectedly about 3:00 o'clock this morning at his home north of the city on R.R. 1, Brazil. His death was attributed to a heart ailment by Dr. Bertram F. Duckwall, Clay County coroner.

A lifelong resident of Clay County, “Pokie” was born on Jan 9, 1892, the son of James H. and Anna C. (Marshall) Alsip. A native of Asherville, he has spent his early years in that vicinity and had begun serving his apprenticeship as a barber at the age of 16 years. He had later worked for some time as a coal miner before opening his own barber shop, which he operated for more than 50 years.

On Jan. 11, 1913, he was united in marriage to the former Miss. Josephine Lete who preceded him in death in 1957, following a long illness. He later married Mrs. Florence (nee Tribble) Loughmiller, who survives him, along with two daughters; Mrs. Evelyn Pell, wife of Dr. John R. Pell, of Brazil, and Mrs. Regina Siegelin of Bogalusa, La., and four grandsons to whom “Pokie” was devoted. Also surviving are four step-children and 12 step-children.

Service arrangements are pending at the Lawson Funeral Home and will be announced later.

'Pokie” Alsip Rites Saturday

Funeral services for Ira B. “Pokie” Alsip, 71 years old, popular Brazil barber who died unexpectedly Wednesday morning at his home on RR 1, Brazil, will be conducted at the Lawson Chapel at 2:00 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Earl S. Cummings Jr., pastor of the First Christian Church, will officiate and full Masonic rites will be in charge of Brazil Lodge No. 264. Interment will be in Cottage Hill Cemetery.

Serving as casket bearers will be Irvin Cagle, Archie Hamm, Robert Heckathorn, Henry Perry, Eugene Thomas and Jack Yocum, all of whom are Masons and were co-workers with Mr. Alsip in the First Christian Church and the Mens' Bible Class.

Friends desiring to pay their respects may call at the Lawson Funeral Home after 4:00 pm Friday.
