According to Francis Beresford in 1662, his parents were Elianor, daughter of Thomas Alsop of Castlehay, and John Beresford of Newton Grange (died 1653).[1]
According to the book on the history of Derby page 20 shows the lineage of the Alsop family of Alsop-on-the-dale and towards the end of the page is Thomas Alsopp who married Ann Bassett daughter of William Bassett of Blore. Although it seems these two Thomas Alsop's are probably related it is not clear if they are one and the same so they have been separated.
If you look at page 44-45 of the same book it shows Thomas Alsop as the father of Ellen Alsop and describes him as of Castle Hay, Staffordshire and her as the wife of John Beresford. There is a baptism record for an Ellen Alsop in Lichfield, Staffordshire in 1576 showing as a daughter of Thomas Alsop. (Staffordshire is adjacent to Derbyshire). The International Genealogical index suggest they married in 1598 in Castle Hay, Hanbury, Stafford.
