At age 46 John Alston was enumerated in the 1870 Census for Ward 1, Columbia, South Carolina. He was a mulatto, born in South Carolina, and his occupation was grocer. His wife was Caroline (Thompson) Alston, age 40, black, b South Carolina. Their son Samuel Thompson was age 14, black, b. South Carolina.[1]
