Biography

John ALSTON, baptized 25 Feb 1668/9, Pavenham, Bedfordshire.[1]

John was the son of William Alston, Gent. of Middlesex, by his wife, Thomasine Brooks, daughter of Unknown Brooks, Esq.[2]

In Royal Ancestry, by Douglas Richardson, there is no mention of a spouse or issue for this John Alston.[3]

Other Biographical Notes:

Apprenticed: 1682 to James Jones of Charleston, South Carolina, merchant, and subsequently immigrated to America.[4]

Residence: St. John's, Berkeley County, South Carolina.[5]

Death

John left a will dated 2 Jan 1718[6] We do not have a death or burial date and we do not know when the will was proved. The death date given above is an estimate, simply after the date when he left a will.

Salley, Jr. "p.114 of The Alstons and Allstons of North and South Carolina....John Alston, the founder of a family distinguished in the annals of SC, was the son of William Alston and came to SC in 1682 as an apprentice to James Jones, a merchant of Charles Town, of whom he was indentured, recorded on page 123 of a book of records of governor of SC covering the years 1672-1692.... This Indenture Witnesseth that John Alston the sonne of William Alston of Hamersmith in the county of Middleses gent doth put himselfe apprentice to James Jones of the County of Carolina merchant to learn and follow his Art with him after the manner of an apprentice and to serve him as his master the full end and terme of Seven years." gos on to say provisions provided and that if at anytime William calls for his son to come, James Jones would pay for passage. Witnessed by John Nicklis and Joseph Pope. John Alston signed his name. In Joseph Groves' history of Alstons, he speculated the Alstons came over with Gov Archdale. John Alston died in 1778-79 having issue, I John Alston, who married Deborah and upon her death Mrs. Sarah Belin. II. William Alston married Esther LaBruce III Elizabeth Alston married Joseph LaBruce IV. Mary Alston married Joseph Warnock V. Peter Alston married Sarah Torquet . VI. Thomasine Alston married Abraham Warnock."
