Biography

Hermann was born in 1864. He was the son of George Alt and Louisa Untersinger. He passed away in 1958.
The emigration record provides his birth place and date and matches the date given on Find a Grave, both in the page text, and the photo of his memorial stone (shared stone with his wife). The combination of the two, along with census records showing him born in Germany, seem to provide adequate support that the birthplace of Rottweil, Wuerttemberg, Germany is correct.
The marriage and death certificates mentioned in the Sources section, below, need to be clarified. I have been able to locate no marriage or death record on Ancestry.com or FamilySearch.org.
FamilySearch.org has records of a Herman Alt arriving in NYC in 1880, but the Wuerttemberg emigration record from 1881 suggests this was a different Herman Alt. The New York arrival record also gives a birth year of 1862, rather than 1864, further supporting the idea that this was a different person. Those arrival records are likely the Herman Alt who can be found on the 1900 and 1910 censuses with a wife named Catherine, or Kate.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:

I believe that Herman's first name was actually George, as was his brother's. This was the German custom of the time. Their first name would be after their dad and they would go by their middle name to distinguish themselves from each other. Ergo the census for Herman where he is named George, because that was his legal first name.
