Tancred di Lecce (1190-4)
|King of Sicily
Heinrick "Enrico" Hohenstaufen 25 Dec 1194-1197
Guglielmo III Altavilla was crowned King of Sicily under the regency of his mother Sibilla d'Aquino, countess of Acerra aftert the death of his father Tancredi. He was supported by the local nobility that opposed the rule of the german Holy Roman Emperor ( Heinrich VI Hohenstaufen, the husband of Costanza Altavilla, dau. of Rruggero II Altavilla, the legitimate heir of the kingdom of Sicily). After finally taking control of the peninsular south of Italy, Heinrich VI crossed to Sicily with a strong army and obliged the child King's mother Sibilla to surrender the kingdom in exchange of the County of Lecce (original title of his father Tancredi) . However only four days after being crowned King of Sicily, Heinrich Hohenstaufen, pretending a conspirancy, arrested Guglielmo, Sibilla and their noble remainig supporters sending them as prisoners to Germany. According to tradition, he blinded and castrated Guglielmo, and that is not surprising, given the tortures that he inflicted to Riccardo d'Aquino, brother of Sibilla, when he captured him in 1196 near Capua (Naples)
