Biography

Samuel was born in 1883. He was the son of Rudolph Alterkruse and Alice White. Samuel grew up on the family farm at Seventysix, Muscatine. He was the second youngest of 5 children: Rosella Mae Altekruse (1877-1951), Mary A. (Altekruse) Walts (1878-1964), Ida Olive (Altekruse) Scott (1882-1974) and Clark Cleveland Alterkruse (1884-1965), Samuel attended local county schools until he completed 8th grade then he worked full time with his father on their family farm^[1]. On May 10, 1911 Samuel married Velma Luella McCleary in Muscatine, Iowa^[2].

In the early years of Samuel and Velma's marriage Velma's parents and youngest sister lived with the young couple^[3].

Samuel and Velma welcomed their only child Edwin born on February 16, 1921 at Cedar, Muscatine, Iowa ^[4].

Samuel passed away on May 18, 1964 in Davenport, Scott County, Iowa and he was laid to rest at the Greenwood Cemetery in Muscatine, Iowa^[5].

14 years later his wife Velma of 53 years passed on August 28, 1974 at Waterloo, Iowa^[6].
