August was born 25 May 1842 in Halinde, Prov. Westphalia, Prussia to Johann Philip Altheide and Hanne Frederika Kampmanns. The family emigrated to the United States in 1852, landing in New Orleans on 20 May. [1] The family settled in Boeuf, Franklin, Missouri where many other German immigrants had settled. [2]. In 1862 August "enlisted in Company G, Fifth Missouri Cavalry of Benton's Hussars, which in November was consolidated with the Fourth Missouri Cavalry, serving in Company M, and afterward in Company D." [3] He passed away in 1898. [4]
