Her parents Elmer W. (age 28, tenant farmer) and Annetta Altland (30, mother of four, all living) rented a farm on Pike Road in Jackson Township in 1910, where they lived with Esther "Marie" (9), her siblings Raymond Michael (8), George Washington (4) and Harvey Peter Altland (2), as well as her maternal grandfather Michael Gantz (62, hand on the home farm).[3]
By 1920, they had purchased a farm in Jackson Township.[4] The household then encompassed Elmer W. (age 38, farmer), Annette (39), Esther M. (18), and her siblings Raymond M. (17, sawyer in furniture factory), George W. (13), Harvey P. (11) and Mary P. Altland (8).[4]
On 2 June 1923[5] in Jackson Township, she married Lehman Strausbaugh, son of Nathaniel Miller "Nathan" Strasbaugh and Cordelia "Cora" Dissinger.[6] They had two sons:
Esther M. (age 29) and Lehman (age 33, stone quarry worker) owned their own home in Jackson Township by 1930, which they shared with their sons George E. (6) and Robert Nathaniel Strausbaugh (2).[5]
They weathered the Great Depression and remained in their home through 1940, when the household continued to include Lehman (age 43, stone and lime company worker), Esther M. (39), George E. (16) and Robert N. Strasbaugh (12).[11] The record shows that Esther and Lehman had completed seven years of formal education.[11] George and Robert were still in school.[11]
Esther died 18 March 1975 in Spring Grove, York County,[2] and was buried there at Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery.[12]
