OBITUARY MR. C. F. ALTMANN Carl Ferdinand Altmann was born at Balhannah on October 17th, 1864, His father, Johann Carl Altmann, had arrived in the colony about 1843 and after working in the Hills district and in the South East, also visiting the Bendigo gold fields, he returned to Balhannah, where he bought (in 1855) the farm known as "Blackwood Park," which has been in the possession of the Altmann family ever since. His mother, Johanne Louise Liebelt, was a daughter of one of the original settlers in Hahndorf. On April 5th, 1894, he married Bertha Wilhelmine Seidel, of Lobethal, who predeceased him in September, 1902. The children of this marriage are Messrs. W. A. Altmann (Oakbank), Alfred Altmann (Ballhannah) and Otto Altmann (Mount Barker Junction). On October 29th, 1903, he married Lydia Amalie Seidel, who survives her husband. The issue of this second marriage was three children: Mr. Ben. Altmann, Mrs. C. Waller and Miss L. Altmann. All his life he was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran church, Hahndorf, which he served as trustee for 25 years (since 1914) and also as church and school elder. He was a very active supporter of the under-takings of his church, both in congregational affairs and in the missions at large. His farm (he was engaged mainly in potato-growing and dairying) was recognised as a model of carefulness. For many years he suffered from neuritis, and about a week before his death, contracted pneumonia. He passed away on Wednesday, July 25th in his 75th year. His funeral, which took place on Friday, at Hahndorf, was largely attended. Rev. Blaess officiated at the graveside. Besides his widow and six children, he leaves 10 grandchildren, one brother (Mr. W. Altmann, Monarto) and five sisters (Mesdames J. A. Liebelt (Hahndorf), I. Bean (Adelaide), Dohnt (Morgan), McIntee (Boulder, W.A.), and Duncan (Grafton, N.S.W.).
