Biography

Alice Eleanor Alto was born 12 September 1921 in Menahga, Wadena County, Minnesota to Anton Alto and Hilma Mattila. She had two brothers, Elmer and Lee (Raymond), and one sister, Agnes.

On April 16, 1930, she was listed in the United States Census as an 8-year-old, single, white, female, born in Minnesota (father born in Finland, mother born in Minnesota), and living in Green Valley Township, Becker County, Minnesota, United States as daughter of head of household with father Anton Alto, 41, mother Hilme Alto, 36, siblings Raymond Alto, 13, Elma A Alto, 15, and Agnes M Alto, 10.

Alice was listed in the 1940 United States Census on April 18 as an 18-year-old, single, white, female, born in Minnesota, and living in Green Valley Township, Becker County, Minnesota, United States as daughter of head of household with father Anton Alto, 50, mother Hilma Alto, 47, brothers Elmer Alto, 25, Raymond Alto, 23, and sister-in-law Irene Alto, 18.

Alice was united in marriage to George Donald Maurer on 18 October 1947 in Menahga, Wadena County, Minnesota. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Maurer were the witnesses.

Twin sons Jerold Richard and Michael George were born 23 June 1948 in Park Rapids, Hubbard County, Minnesota. Sadly, Jerold died of meningitis at 4 months old, on 1 November 1948, in Park Rapids, Hubbard County, Minnesota.

Alice E. Maurer was listed in the 1950 United States Census on April 24 as a 28-year-old, married, white, female, born in Minnesota (father born in Finland, mother born in US), and living on State Aid Road No. 5, Menahga Village, Wadena County, Minnesota as wife of head of household with husband George A Maurer, 28, and son Michael G Maurer, 1.

Alice and George were the parents of two daughters: Patricia in 1951 and Janice in 1956.

Alice's husband, George, passed away 9 March 1968 and was buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA.
