Biography

Alicia / Alice _____ was the wife of John Gregory. She was buried at Broughton-Sulney 3 Dec 1617.[1]

Alice, wife of John Gregory was not Alice Alton

Sourced by Ancestry Trees and unidentified LDS Ancestral Files, allegedly Alice Alton, d/o John and Elizabeth (Brightman) Alton, was born about 1554; was buried 3 Dec 1617 Broughton-Sulney, Co Nottingham, England, and was married to John Gregory.

Gregory Pedigree (1677)

It is fairly obvious reading the above pedigree chart[2] that Alice was not an Alton and that perhaps someone read the chart incorrectly. Altons married Gregorys a couple of generations later and then her name was Elizabeth.

John Coddington mentioned this: "Hoppin (op. cit., 3:5a6) asserts that she was Alice Alton; this is probably due to confusion in Hoppin's mind with the wife of John Gregory of Nottingham, grandson of John and Alice Gregory. The wife of this younger John Gregory was in fact Elizabeth Alton... The maiden surname of Alice, wife of the elder John Gregory, is not known."[1]

Baylye ?

Grant Gregory suggests that the wife of John Gregory might have been a Baylye, but presented no reason for thinking so.[3] One creator of an Ancestry tree has actually found some sources to support this. Alice Bayly, d/o Abednayo Bayle buried Sep 1617 in St Leonard, Shoreditch Hackney, Middlesex, England. Alice Bayley d/o William Bayley, bpt. 14 June 1554 St Lawrence Pountney City of London, London, England or Alice Allton, d/o John bpt 9 Apr 1556 Halifax, St John the Baptist, Yorkshire, England. These places are all wrong to be the wife of John.

Bayle-96 and Unknown-459206 appear to represent the same person because: From the notes on each profile these are obviously meant to be the same person, and Unknown is currently the correct LNAB.

Alice needs to have her Last name at birth changed to Unknown. Objections

Gregory-213 and Alton-6 appear to represent the same person because: Profile is orphaned with no good source info. Can easily be merged away.
