John Turnpenny Altree was born at Wolverhampton in 1736.
He was employed as assistant-surgeon aboard the transport Lady Penrhyn on the voyage of the First Fleet to establish a colony in NSW which departed Spithead in May 1787. He was replaced as ship's surgeon after becoming ill at Tenerife in the Canary Islands in June 1787 and continued the voyage to Botany Bay as assistant surgeon to Arthur Bowes Smyth. On 14 February 1788 he was sent to Norfolk Island aboard HMAT Supply as assistant surgeon with the first group to settle the island. He returned to England aboard the Waaksamheyd from Port Jackson in 1791.
John Altree died May 1798 and was buried at St. Peter's Collegiate Church, Wolverhampton, England
