Who was Mary Ann Alvis? We can determine from censuses that she was born ca 1760-1770. She could have been a daughter of David Sr and thus a sister of the Alvis men of the Revolutionary War generation, or a daughter of one of the older men in that generation, most likely John. She was living with Joseph Woodson in 1810.
1820 Goochland Co VA: 011200/00001 (due to the categories used that year, this number indicates three sons, not four, b 1794-1802, 1802-1804, and 1804-1810).

The Alvis Exchange, 35-12, printed parts of two deeds involving land deeded by Joseph Woodson to his sons John W and Matthew W Alvis. These were found in Goochland Co VA Deed Book 25, p 509: 24 July 1824. John W Alvis to Wm Salmon. p 436: 30 July 1823. Matt W Alvis to Wm Salmon. See also Book 27, p 110. 3 May 1876 [sic]. Mary Alvis to Wm Salmon. The documents read, in part: This Indenture made the 30th day of July Anno Domini one thousand eight hundred and twenty-three, between Matthew W Alvis of the one part and William Salmon both of the county of Goochland of the other part Witnesseth that the said Matthew W Alvis?, in consideration of the sum of one hundred & thirty dollars to him in hand paid by the said William Salmon? sold by these presents? a certain tract or parcel of land? that said Matthew W Alvis is entitled to by the will of Joseph Woodson dec?d?

Analyses of the various Robert and Matthew Alvises will be made when the Fifth Generation is studied, later in this series of Family Group Charts in The Alvis Exchange, to determine which men were Mary Ann Alvis?s sons.
