Biography

Woodson Stanley Alvis was born on 25 February 1842 in Goochland County, Virginia.

In the 1850 census, Woodson, recorded as "Woodrow" (age 8), was enumerated in his parents' household in Goochland, Goochland, Virginia, United States.^[1]

In the 1860 census, Woodson (age 18), Student, was enumerated in his parents' household in Goochland, Virginia, United States.^[2]

According to the markings on his gravestone, Woodson served in the military on behalf of the Confederacy during the Civil War, but the markings are faded and this writer was unable to find a source or to make out exactly what the gravestone markings indicated.

Woodson married first, Mary Ann (Harrison) Alvis. Mary died sometime before October of 1868, when Woodson, then a widower, remarried. [source needed for this marriage]

On 27 October 1868, Woodson, a widower, married second, Sarah "Sally" Ann (Webster) Alvis in Goochland County, Virginia.^[3][4]

In the 1870 census, Woodson (age 27), Miller, was enumerated as the head of household in Dover, Goochland, Virginia, United States. His second wife, Sarah, and their infant son, Thomas, age 10 months, were also present in the household.^[5]

In the 1880 census, Woodson (age 37), Miller, was enumerated as the married head of household in Dover, Goochland, Virginia, United States.^[6]

In the 1900 census, Woodson (age 58), Grist Miller, was enumerated as the married head of household in Dover District, Goochland, Virginia, United States.^[7]

Woodson died on 2 March 1902 and was laid to rest in the Alvis-Richmond Family Cemetery, Goochland County, Virginia.^[8] His Find-a-Grave entry has a photo of his gravestone, which includes his birth and death dates.
