In 1997 Hancock Alvis wrote the following about his ancestor Henry S Alvis, "the Infamous." [That?s his epithet, not the editor's.] Henry "left this world hanging by his neck from a tree limb in Lawrence Co TN in Oct 1884. He is supposedly buried in Mt Zion Cemetery in Lawrence Co TN. The key word here is legend—some [of the stories about Henry] are probably verifiable, some are not."
