Biography
Abner Whiting Alvord, was born 20 May 1802. He was the second child of Elihu Alvord and Alice Morley Townsend. His birth location probably was in New York State, as his birth family resided there before they moved to Iowa.
He married 15 May 1825 @ Ellicottville, New York, Mrs. Mercy (Ewers) Blanchard, widow of Samuel Blanchard of Cattaraugus County, NY [b. 22 Jun 1799 @ Gill, MA, daughter of John & Hannah (Morley or Mawley) Ewers; d. 14 Mar 1850 @ Davenport, IA]. They had 5 children:
- Hannah Alvord, b. 19 May 1826 @ Ellicottville, New York
- Elihu Alvord, b. 6 Jun 1829; d. 11 Jul 1845, accidentally shot
- Alice Alvord, b. 16 Feb 1831, Warren, Pennsylvania
- Cynthia Alvord, b. 22 Mar 1833, Warren, Pennsylvania
- Keziah Alvord, b. 8 Mar 1840, Little Valley, New York
According to the Alvord genealogy, After his wife's death, Abner Whiting Alvord decided to return to the old home in Conn. He died soon after his arrival of smallpox. He taught his daughter, Cynthia, to "peg shoes" for him, hence he must have been a shoemaker.
Abner Whiting Alvord passed away on 2 Jan 1854 from smallpox. His occupation was a shoemaker, and his last residency was in Davenport, Iowa.[1]
