Biography

Cyrus James Alvord was the ninth child of Ruth Ann (Richardson; 1800-1875) and Zelotes Alvord (1790-1835). Per the Alvord genealogy, he was born 29 July 1833, at Hartland, New York ^[1].

In the 1850 census Cyrus (age 16) was in Hartland, Niagara, New York, United States.^[2]

Cyrus married first, Abigail Johnson in April 1855 in Van Buren County, Michigan, United States.^[3]

His first wife died in 1856, after which Cyrus married second, on 31 Dec 1857 at Sycamore, Kane County, Illinois, Melvina Bennett ^[4],^[5] [b. 10 Apr 1840, daughter of Sarah (Reser; 1821 - 1892)) & Elias Bennett (1817 - 1864); d. 13 November 1874, Macon, Missouri].

In the 1865 census Cyrus (age 30) was in District 01, Hartland , Niagara, New York, United States.^[6]

In the 1870 census Cyrus (age 36) was the head of household in Burlington, Kane, Illinois, United States.^[7]

This family removed to Macon County, Missouri, where Malvina died, 13 Nov 1874 ^[8].

Cyrus married third, 30 Oct 1875, Jane Elizabeth Winfield (or Wingfield) [b. 30 Jan 1848, Payson, Illinois, daughter of Mary (Hickerson) & Thomas F. Wingfield]. They had 4 children:

1. Willie Alvord (Oct 1876 - 20 Jan 1877)
2. Daisy Ruth Alvord (2 Mar 1877 - 24 Jan 1923)
3. Bessie Irena Alvord (27 Oct 1880 - Jul 1967)
4. Ada Mae Alvord (22 Sep 1893 -)

Cyrus James Alvord died 8 Jan 1917 near Clarence, Missouri, at the home of his daughter, Daisy Ruth (Alvord) Willey ^[9]. His grave is in Oakwood Cemetery, Macon, Macon County, Missouri, USA.

Notes

The identity of Cyrus's third wife was published in the Alvord genealogy as Mrs. Jaley Elizabeth (Wingfield) Davis, which is uncertain. The correct spelling of her maiden surname probably was Wingfield (per that of her father, Thomas Wingfield), however the census records which pertain to Jane Elizabeth Winfield were scripted with misspellings of her name ^[10],^[11].

No evidence has yet been produced to document that she was married previously to a 'Davis', however the 1870 census record does list the 'Windfield' family living next door to the family of James Davis.
