Biography

Lucius Gad Alvord, born 2 Jun 1822 at Shelburne, Massachusetts, was the first child of Epephus Alvord (1796-1862) and Hannah Lufkin (12 Jul 1798 - 20 Mar 1867).

He married first, 6 Sep 1849 in Buckland, Massachusetts, Ellen Abigail Sherwin [1] [b. 13 Dec 1829 @ Buckland, Massachusetts, daughter of William and Marcia (Carter) Sherwin; d. 6 Dec 1870 @ Shelburne, Massachusetts]. They had 3 children, born at Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts:

  1. William Milton Alvord (15 Apr 1851 - 9 Feb 1853) [2]
  2. William Sherwin Alvord (1 Aug 1853 - 28 Jan 1854) [3]
  3. Arthur Henry Alvord, b. 29 Jul 1857

This family was enumerated in the 1870 U.S. census in Shelburne, Massachusetts [4].

After the death of his first wife (6 Dec 1870), Lucius Gad Alvord married second, 9 Oct 1872 at Charlemont, Massachusetts, Lucy Woodbridge Sherwin (sister of his first wife, b. 19 Sep 1833) [5].

As published in the Alvord genealogy, In his younger days Lucius Gad Alvord taught singing-schools for many years in Ashfield, Charlemont, and Shelburne, Mass., and was leader of the Shelburne choir for fifteen years. In 1854 he went to Wis., where he lived for eighteen months. Returning, he went to work in the chair factory of Lyman Conant. About 1865, with his brother-in-law, J. A. Franklin, he formed a partnership and bought out the Conant Chair Factory, and carried on this business until 1878, when he went to Holyoke and worked for his brother Alvan in the wood and coal business. Here he remained until 1881, when he returned to Shelburne and moved to the Frank Skinner place, where he resided until his death. He was a deacon in the church for nineteen years and a constant attendant. He held the office of postmaster for fourteen years.

Mr. Alvord was a Christian of the old New England school, very strong in his religious faith, and earnest and practical in carrying out its teachings. He was quiet and unobtrusive, loved and respected by all.

Lucius Gad Alvord died 5 Nov 1901 at Shelburne, Massachusetts [6]. His grave is in Shelburne Center Cemetery, Shelburne, Franklin County, Massachusetts, USA [7].
