Biography

Asahel Alvord was born in Northampton, Massachusetts on December 16, 1720, the sixth child of Thomas Alvord (1683-1768) and Mary (Strong) Alvord (1690-) [1],[2].

On June 4, 1741, he married Rachel Gould, daughter of Thomas Gould and Mary Crittenden [3]. They had at least 6 children [4]:

  1. Thomas Gould Alvord (1742-1810) [5]; married 1) Keziah Orvis; 2) Hannah Hart
  2. Obed Alvord (1744-1794) [6]; married Catherine Johnson
  3. Asahel Alvord (1746-abt.1810) [7]; married Bette May
  4. Elisha Alvord (1748-aft.1778) [8]
  5. Eunice Alvord (1752-1757) [9]; bapt. 8 Sep 1758
  6. Alexander Alvord (abt.1755-1762)

Per the Alvord genealogy, Asahel Alvord owned the covenant (was a church member) Feb. 21, 1741, at Durham, Conn. He was living in Litchfield, Conn., in 1742. He probably moved shortly after this time to Colchester, possibly living a few years at East Hampton, Conn. The settlement of his estate in the Colchester Probate Records shows that he had scarcely property enough to meet the claims. According to U. S. Census, 1790, Rachel Alvord was living alone at Colchester. Jan. 5, 1795, "Widow Alford" was received from the Marlboro Church to the Kensington Church (Kensington, Conn., Ch. Rec.) This may refer to the widow of Asahel Alvord.

Asahel Alvord died in Colchester, Connecticut, February 27, 1761 [10],[11], and probably was buried in the Colchester Burying Ground [12].

Note: The online memorial site presents his death year as 1764, which is not immediately discernible since no grave marker is depicted.
