Biography

Chauncey Hart Alvord, born 14 Dec 1803 in East Hampton, Connecticut, was the fourth and final child of Sarah (Sears) Alvord (1761-1819), the second wife of Seth Alvord Sr. (1754-1836).

He married 1 Aug 1827 @ Goshen, Connecticut, Harriet Elizabeth Lobdell [b. 15 Dec 1809, daughter of Dennis & Clara (Northrup) Lobdell; d. 12 Apr 1804 @ Morris, Connecticut]; they had 7 children:

  1. Anne (Alvord) Markham (1828-1912), b. 23 May 1828 @ Goshen; married Noah Sparrow Markham
  2. Joseph Henry Alvord (1830-1907), b. 1 Dec 1830 @ Goshen; married 1) Betsey Matilda Latham; 2) Betsey Ann Beebe

Per the Alvord genealogy, Chauncey Hart Alvord learned the clothier's trade of his brother, Otis, at Middlefield, Conn., when he was sixteen years old. After Otis removed to N. Y. State Chauncey went to Torrington, Conn., and worked for some time ; from there he went to Goshen, Conn., and worked until his health failed. Seeking out-of-door employment he took a dairy farm, and as his health improved he bought a farm in Litchfield Co., South Farms, town of Morris, Conn., where he lived until his death. He represented his town in the Conn. State Legislature at Hartford in 1867, and frequently held town offices.

Chauncey Hart Alvord died 11 May 1881 at Morris, Connecticut. His grave is in Morris Burying Ground, Morris, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA [1].
