Biography

Alanson Alvord, born 30 Jun 1803 at Granby, Massachusetts, was the eleventh child of Gad Alvord and Phebe White [1].

Per the Alvord genealogy, Rev. Alanson Alvord entered Yale College in 1830, studied divinity with Dr. Cox of New York in 1833, settled in the ministry at Chester, Mass., 1835. As a young man he was athletic and displayed unusual strength in lifting weights. He was fond of engaging in the sports of the young men of his time. He also had a fine voice for singing and while studying theology in New York City he received a good salary for training choirs six evenings in the week, a part of the time leading the music in a large church, besides having a number of pupils in vocal culture. He took lessons of Lowell Mason, then considered the best of teachers.

He married three times, the first time on ​23 Jan 1834 in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, Maria Wilbur Forse [b. 12 Oct 1804, daughter of Hannah (Smith) & Thomas Force; d. 18 Feb 1836, Chester, Massachusetts]. They had one child:

  1. Maria Wilberforce Alvord, b. 9 Feb 1836 @ Chester; married 12 Aug 1858 @ Grass Lake, Michigan, Daniel Vrooman; resided Canton, China; d. 4 Mar 1895 @ East Oakland, California

After his first wife died, Alanson Alvord married (2nd) Adaline Barrows. Their intention to marry was filed on 11 March 1837 at Chester, Massachusetts [2], then married on 3 Apr 1837 [3] [b. 1 Nov 1811 @ Brimfield, Massachusetts, daughter of Dr. Charles & Huldah (Frizzell) Barrows; d. 3 May 1849]. They had 4 children:

  1. Austin White Alvord (1838-), b. 3 Feb 1838 @ Chester
  2. Adaline Amanda Alvord, b. 8 Oct 1840 @ Westmoreland, New Hampshire; A.M. Oberlin College 1868; administrative educator; married 8 Oct 1867 Franklin Estabrook; no children
  3. Edward Alanson Alvord (13 Jan 1842 - 1 Mar 1846)
  4. Edward Alanson Alvord (26 Mar 1849 - 26 May 1849)

His second wife died soon after the birth of their last child. Subsequently Alanson Alvord married (3rd) on 31 Jul 1849 @ Wethersfield, Illinois, Sarah Frances Little [4] [b. 31 Jul 1829 @ Hollis, New Hampshire, daughter of Abner Bayley & Nancy (Tenney) Little]. They had 3 children:

  1. Frances Little Alvord (1851-1865), b. 14 Feb 1851 @ Downey Grove, Illinois; d. 14 Feb 1851, Oberlin, Ohio
  2. Henry Alanson Alvord (1859-1860), b. 31 Jan 1859 @ Grass Lake, Michigan; d. 17 Feb 1860 @ Unadilla, Michigan
  3. Laura Alvord (1861-), b. 20 Apr 1861 @ York Ohio; married 24 Sep 1882 @ Wethersfield, Illinois, Wallace Warner; no children; d. 27 Oct 1895 @ Duluth, Minnesota

Alanson Alvord passed away 2 Dec 1862 @ Warrenham, Pennsylvania. His grave is in Coburn-Dewing Cemetery, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, USA [5].
