Biography

Birth

Elijah Alvord was born 17 Jan 1718/19 in Northampton, Massachusetts [1], and baptized the same day [2]. He was the fifth child of John Alvord and Dorcas Lyman [3].

Marriage

Elijah Alvord and Hannah (Judd; abt.1726-1798) were married abt 1750.

They had 2 children:

  1. Caleb Alvord (1751-1819); m. Mary Murdock, 26 Dec 1779, Wilmington, Vermont; d. 24 Dec 1819 [4]
  2. Hannah Alvord (abt.1754-1811); married Abner Smead

Per the Alvord genealogy, Elijah Alvord had a warehouse near the mouth of Stony Brook before 1765. He kept the first inn in 1755 and sold goods more than a mile below in Falls Woods. In 1761 Elijah Alvord was licensed to sell tea, coffee and china ware at So. Hadley. In 1770 Noah Goodman succeeded him as inn-keeper. In 1755 it was voted that Elijah Alvord might agree with several persons to cross their lands with lumber in the Falls Field and Taylor's Field, So. Hadley— to carry lumber around that had been floated down the river. Mr. Alvord was prominent in town and church affairs. He held the office of selectman in So. Hadley in 1761. With Nathaniel White, Jr., he was appointed a committee to prosecute certain persons, who cut down and drew away a part of the meeting house.

Residence

Elijah removed to Draper, Province of New York (Wilmington, Vermont) abt. 1771. The first deed of Land was dated, 12 Jan 1773, from Zephaniah Swift. [5]

Elijah Alvord died about 1788 at Greenfield, Massachusetts.
