Nathan Alvord was born in South Hadley, Massachusetts, the tenth child of John Alvord and Dorcas Lyman. His birth date is not yet evident, hence estimated herein at about 1731 based upon the birth dates of his two proximate siblings.
Per the Alvord genealogy, March 20, 1752, Nathan Alvord received from his father, John Alvord, a grant of land in South Hadley, Mass.
Sept. 9, 1761, Nathan Alvord of Windsor, Conn., husbandman, conveyed land upon the Conn. River in South Hadley, Mass., to Ebenezer Hunt of Northampton, Mass.
Nathan Alvord married first, 15 Jan 1756 @ S. Hadley, Massachusetts, Lydia White (1732 - 1784); they had 8 children, born at South Hadley:
Nathan Alvord served in the American Revolutionary War: Alvord, Nathan, Private, Lieut. Martin Waites' Co., Col. Ruggles Woodbridge's Reg. Pay abstract for travel allowance, etc. Marched to New Providence on an alarm at Bennington, Aug. 17,1777; service 4 days. Also muster roll sworn to in Hampshire Co. Jan. 6, 1778. Alvord, Nathan, Private, Capt. Enoch Chapin's Co., Col. Elisha Porter's Reg. Enlisted Sept. 24, 1777; dis. Oct. 11, 1777; service 23 days in Northern Department. (Mass. Soldiers in Rev.)
Nathan Alvord was a member of a committee on Revolutionary matters at South Hadley 1774-78. He was appointed administrator on the estate of Moses White of South Hadley in 1783, from which it may be inferred that his wife Lydia White belonged to this family, though the records fail to disclose it.
Nathan Alvord married second, 16 Sep 1784 (intent) @ Hadley, Massachusetts, Mrs. Mary Marshall, widow of John Marshall.
With his [second] wife Mary [widow of Marshall] he deeded land in South Hadley in 1789, and must have moved to Brookfield, Vt., at this time, since U. S. census for 1790 makes him a resident of that town, during that year, as well as ten years later, when he and his wife were living in the same house with no family. His second wife brought her church letter from Ipswich, Mass., in 1786 to South Hadley. Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Alvord were members of the church at Brookfield at its organization about 1790.
Nathan Alvord died probably at Brookfield, Vermont.
