Biography

Noadiah Alvord, the eighth child of Zebadiah Alvord and Rebecca Searle, was born 5 Jul 1764 at Northampton, Massachusetts.

Noadiah Alvord served in the American Revolutionary War, synopsized as follows: "Alvord, Noadiah, Sunderland, Descriptive list of enlisted men detached from 6th Hampshire Co., Reg. Capt. Seth Pierce's Co., Col. Seth Murray's Reg. age 16 years ; stature 5ft. 6 ins. ; complexion dark ; residence Sunderland ; rank, private ; mustered July 17, 1780. Enlisted 3mos. from time of arrival at Claverack. List dated Warwick. Also private Capt. Seth Pierce's Co., Seth Murray's Hampshire Co. Reg. Enlisted July 15, 1780; dis. Oct. 10, 1780; service 3mos. 6d. Company raised to re-enforce Continental Army. Roll dated Leverett. Also descriptive list of enlisted men, aged 17 years, stature 5ft. 7 ins.; complexion light; hair light; occupation farmer; residence, Sunderland. Enlisted Mar. 27, 1781, for 3 years." (Mass. Soldiers in Rev.)

Per the Alvord genealogy, Noadiah Alvord "was in St. Clair's defeat in 1791, not heard from afterwards." This explains the mention in his father's will to Noadiah "if living".

For those interested in the probable fate of Noadiah Alvord, St. Clair's defeat was the most ignominious defeat ever dealt to the U.S. Army by native peoples, fought in the Northwest Territories near the headwaters of the Wabash River, current day state of Ohio. Of the 632 Army (enlisted and officers) men killed in the battle, Noadiah probably was one of them. Their remains were left on the battlefield, never recovered or identified because the outcome of the battle was essentially a rout. Years later some of the bones were gathered and buried in a mass grave, located at current day Fort Recovery.
