Biography

William Shearing Amass was born in 1845 in Debenham, Suffolk, England to William Thurston Amass and Mary Ann (Shearing) Amass. His birth was registered in Bosmere, Suffolk in the last quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Shearing.[1]

In 1851 William Amass (age 5) lived at Front Street in Debenham with his father William (51, Master Butcher & Farmer Employing 2 Men), mother Mary Ann (46), and four siblings: Edwin (15), John (13), Mary Ann (3), and Arthur (0), as well as nurse Margate Luff (44) and servant Emma Rowe (17).[2]

In 1861 William "Small" [Amass] (age 15, Butcher Son) lived in Debenham with his father William (61, Butcher), mother Maryann (53), and four siblings: Helen [John] (23, Butcher), Elizabeth (19), Maryann (13), and Arthur (10, Scholar).[3]

William's father passed away in 1865.

In 1871 William Amass (age 25, Butcher) lived in Debenham with his widowed mother Mary A (66, Butcher) and three siblings: George (39, Farmer), John (35, Butcher), and Mary A (23).[4]

William Shearing Amass married Rebecca Sampson in 1871. The marriage was registered in Poplar, London in the last quarter of the year.[5]

William and Rebecca had three children: Elizabeth Sampson (Amass) Chatten (1874-1918), Augusta Mary Amass (1876-1896), and Edwin Amass (1879-1879).

William's wife Rebecca Amass passed away in 1880.

William Shearing Amatt [Amass] married Emma Stokes in 1881. The marriage was registered in Bosmere in the first quarter of the year.[6]

In 1881 William Amass (age 35, Butcher) lived in Debenham with his wife Emma (39) and two daughters: Elizabeth (6, Scholar) and Augusta (4, Scholar), in the household of his brother John (46, Butcher).[7]

In 1891 William Amass (age 45, Butcher) lived in Debenham with his two daughters: Elizabeth (16, Scholar) and Augusta (14, Scholar), as well as his brother John (52, Butcher).[8] He is still married, so his wife might have just been away from home during the census (there is an Emma Amoss of the right age as a visitor in St Matthew, Suffolk).

In 1901 William Amass (age 55, Butcher) lived at High Street in Debenham with his wife Emma (59), daughter Elizabeth S (26), and brother John (63, Butcher).[9]

William S Amass passed away on 17 Jun 1903, aged 58 years. His death was registered in Bosmere in the second quarter of the year.[10] "AMASS William Shearing of Debenham Suffolk butcher died 17 June 1903 Administration Ipswich 15 July to Emma Amass widow Effects £547 5s. 7d."[11]
