Biography

George was born in 1812, in Debenham, Suffolk, England, to George Amass and his wife Mary Bennett. The originator of the Gedcom recorded George was privately baptised on 5th, September 1812. [1]

On 27th March, 1832, in Coddenham, Suffolk, England, George married Louisa Banyard. [2][3]

In 1833 George welcome his son George Edgar into the world and christened him on 26 May 1833 in Coddenham, Suffolk, England. [4]

By 1841 George, a butcher, had moved his family to Debenham, Suffolk, England. When the 1841 census was taken, George was loving in Gostling Hall, with Louisa and their children, Louisa (7), Mary (5), Walter (3) and Arthur (1). [5]

In 1851, George is recorded as a widower and butcher. At the time of the census, George was resident in the County Jail in St. Margarets, Ipswich, Suffolk, England. [6]

Offence: Leaving his family chargeable to the parish of Debenham.
Petitioner: Overseer of the parish of Debenham.
Sentence: 14 days with hard labour ending 18th June 1849.
Previous convictions: Once as a debtor (Volume K Page 59)
Imprisoned, 29 AUG 1849, in Ipswich County Gaol.
Offence: Leaving his family chargeable to Debenham.
Petitioner: John [?] Relieving Offficer Debenham.
Sentence: 1 calendar month with hard labour ending 29th August 1849.
Previous convictions: Twice, once for the like offence 14 days, and once for debt (Volume K Page 176)
Imprisoned, 10 FEB 1851, in Ipswich County Gaol.
Offence: Assaulting Police Constables in the Execution of their Duty.
Where Committed: Barham Union [Work]House.
Sentence: 12 calendar months.
Previous convictions: Three times, twice for leaving his family chargeable to the parish of Debenham and once as a debtor. (Volume M Page 180)
Imprisoned, 30 MAR 1851.

Dark complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, long visage. Several cuts on the thumb of left hand.

In 1853, in Bosmere Registration District, Suffolk, England, George married Caroline Smart. [7]

In 1861, George (48) a Butcher, is living in School Road, Coddenham, Suffolk, England, with Caroline (34) and children, Samuel (15), Georgiana (10), Anna Jane (4) and Caroline (2). [8]

George passed away in 1863, in Bosmere Registration District, Suffolk, England. [9]
