Norman was born at the turn of 1910, in Missouri, United States, to Edwin Amass and his wife Lillian Wagner. In the 1910 United States Census, Norman was recorded as being 4 months old, and living with his parents, Edwin T (32), a Railway Mail Clerk U.S. and Lilian M (28) and brother Edwin T Jnr (5), in 4618a Bell Avenue, St Louis Ward 25, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri, United States. [1]

In the 1920 United States Census, Norman (10) is living with his widowed mother Lilian (38) a book keeper for a wholesale company, and his brother Edwin T (15) and aunt Viola Wagner (29), at 4587, Kensington Place, St Louis Ward 25, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri, United States. [2]

In 1930, when the United States Census was taken, Norman (20), a Stock Clerk with a hardware company, had moved to 4418, Forest Park Boulevard, St Louis (Districts 1-250), St Louis (Independent City), Missouri, United States, with his mother Lilian (48), and aunt Viola Wagner (39), a Stenographer with an Auto Manufacturing Company. In 1940 Norman (30), a newspaper vendor, was living with his aunt Viola Wagner (49) a stenographer with a tire and rubber company, and his mother Lilian (58) at 4354, Forest Park, Ward 17, St. Louis, St. Louis City, St. Louis City, Missouri, United States. [4]
