(1946). ON Saturday afternoon I went to Athelstone with the Attorney- General (Mr. Abbott, KC). He opened a fair and welcome home to 87 service men, who enlisted from that fertile district nestling below, the Gorge and Black Hill. . . .

STURDY MEN. ARTHUR Amber is another man who remained loyal to his hills. "The place I came from is where my father was carried down there a baby in arms," he told me. "I was born in the old home 67 years ago come the third of April. I went out to work for different people, then started on my own, and never looked back. I had bullocks and have had some hectic trips down those steep hills. I have brought copper ore from that ridge, Walt. Smith’s property. I had a garden and grazing property, and at 60 handed the garden over to my son Laurie. Now I am content to potter about on an acre of land.”

I also met Charlie Amber, just back from a fishing holiday at Blanchetown. He is known as a prominent wood carter on the Gorge road, started with bullock team more than 30 years ago, and has carted thousands of tons.
