"JAMES AMBROSE was born October 29, 1828 in Chilton Foliat, Wiltshire, England. He died December 25, 1892. October 10, 1850 he married Amelia Hedges, born November 13, 1831 at Chilton Foliat; she died July 12, 1872. Both are buried in Hudson Cemetery. The children of James and Amelia (Hedges) Ambrose were: Edward, born 1852, died 1854 in New York; Frederick, born November 4, 1854, died March 15, 1898; Leah, born November 18, 1856, died March 7, 1935, married November 1878, William T. C. Burtis; Stephen, born February 2, 1858, died June 5, 1869; Lucy, married Richard Houghton; Edward, born March 7, 1862; Alfred J., married Elizabeth Trimmer; William H., born June 12, 1869, died June 19, 1948, married November 23, 1892, Mary E. McKinney, born 1873, died 1958. James Ambrose became a carpenter’s apprentice at an early age. In 1854 he came to the United States and worked as a shipwright until 1856 when he moved his family to Illinois. He built a house on Outlet 21 in Hudson, continuing his trade as a carpenter. He then rented a farm from Jacob H. Burtis which he farmed for four years. He bought 80 acres in Section 22 from William Clarke and three years later bought an adjoining 80, on which he lived the remainder of his life.
