Biography

Knighted 2 Dec 1548 (or 3 Mar 1549). Died 5 Sep 1554; Will (PCC 9 More) 28 May; proved 27 Sep 1554. He refused to accept the office of Alderman until four months after his election, having in the interval been fined £40 and had his shops closed and his "goodes and catalles" sequestered, and it was not until a week after he had been committed to Newgate that he finally surrendered. He retained his Aldermanry until his death, serving as Sheriff and Lord Mayor in due course.

To be buried in the Parish Church of St Michell next Croked Lane in the fishmongers chapel at the North side of the Alter.

To my brother Alexander one of my wearing gownes, same to sonne Thomas Hewet, brothers Hamond Amcotts and Vincent Amcotts.......

All my Skarlett gowns and skarlet cloaks to be sold for poore.

All lands in Surrey and Essex to to wief Dame Johane for life, the manor os Sheremerke with parke called Ilfeide in tenure of John Washford and John Swane to Henrie Hewett sonne and heir to Thomas Hewett and my daughter Julyan his deceased wief; also Hamond Hewett another son ditto t Tenement Robert Saunders holdeth of £6.8s yearly value; also to William Hewett another son ditto, my manor of Stook of yerly value of £4. with tenements held by Henry Hengear, Roger Upton and Willyam Rowley.
