Boston, May 28 (Special).- Elisha F. Ames, for fifty years an active business man of this citv, well known to the dry good trades and in real estate circles. died at the home of his brother at Riverside, Cal., recently.
Funeral over the body were held at his late home at Swampscott Thursday afternoon. He was born at Marshfleld, Mass., February 23, 1820, and came to Boston as an apprentice at the age of seventeen. Developing strong mercantile tastes and capacities he early entered business for hlmself, in which he actively contlnued until 1884, belng from 1801 the senior of the firm of Cushing & Ames, both parties retiring permanently from ln the former year.
In 1847 Mr. Ames became a resident of Medford, removing to Boston in 1872 and to Swampscott In 1885. During his later years he had travelled extensively ln this country, Europe and the East, spening considerable portions of hla time in Florida California, where he had Interests. Mr. Ames remarkable capacity as a business man and investor, and achieved universal success in all his undertakings.
Descending from William Ames, of Braintree. ancestor of several well-known branches of the Ames family ln Massachusetts, he exhibited in marked degree the strong points of his lineage and enjoyed the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Congregatlonal Church of this clty, and the services at Swampscott were conducted by its pastor Rev. Dr. Herrlck.
Mr. Ames married in Boston, Aprll 3, 1845, Miss Orilla B. Park of Searsport, Me., who with one son Joseph B. Ames, banker, of this clty, and two daughters survive him.
