Martha (Ames) Hues was born in Witham Friary, Somerset, England.
Martha was baptised at Witham Friary on 18 April 1790. She was the sixth of ten children of Thomas Ames and Elizabeth Croome. [1] She was a twin of John.
On 26 December 1811 Martha married John Hughes (or Hues) at Witham Friary. It was the first marriage for both parties. Martha made a mark on the register. Witnesses were John Ames, William Hues and William Barttell. [2] There were three children for the marriage

The baptism records for the children give John's occupation as farmer or yeoman.
Anna Maria died at Chesterblade, within Evercreech parish in 1827. [3]
At the 1841 census Martha Hughes (50) is living at Chesterblade, Somerset with John (55) a farmer, Thomas (15) and Louisa (25). [4] At 1851 Martha Hughes (64) and John (70) are farming 50 acres at Chesterblade. Also in the house are granddaughter Martha M Hughes and servant Martha Salmon [5]
John Hues of Chesterblade was buried at Witham Friary on 2 September 1854 aged 73. [6]
Martha Hues died at Batcombe on 16 January and was buried at Witham Friary on 22 Jan 1867.

Letters of administration for the estate of Martha Hughes, widow, late of Batcombe who died on 16 January 1867 were granted to her daughter and residuary legatee at Wells on 9 August 1867. The effects were under £300. [8]
