Phineas Ames is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A002253.

Phineas was born 26 October 1757, in Rutland, Massachusetts. He was the son of Samuel Ames (abt.1732-1808) and Sarah (Ball) Ames (1737-1790).[1]

During the American Revolution, Phineas served as a private in John Boynton's Company, Colonel Sparhawk's Regiment.[2][3][4] He also provided Civil Service. He was Selectman, 1781, 1782; and Surveyor of Highways, 1783 for Hancock, New Hampshire.[5][6]

On 12 May 1785, Phineas married Mehitable (Jewett) Ames (1765-aft.1807) in Hollis, New Hampshire.[7]

Their children:

In 1796 he moved to Harmony, Maine, and was one of the first settlers there. It was 1801 or 1802 that he first came into Piscataquis County, Maine. He then came across from Harmony and cleared an opening in Sangerville on the north side of Marr Pond, near Lane's Corner. In the fall of 1803 he moved in with his family, and became the first settler in Sangerville. His trip here, like all others of those early settlers, was attended with hardship. He came by the way of a spotted line, his wife on horseback, carrying in her arms a babe only a few months old; but they reached their destination in safety. Mehitable died in 1807 and is buried in Sangerville. Phineas died in Dover South Mills, and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.[8] His grave was unmarked at first, however in 1938 an application was made to provide him with a military headstone.[9][10]

Phineas was the son of Samuel Ames and his wife Sarah Ball. Samuel was the son of Jacob Ames and his wife Ruth Shattuck, Jacob was the son of John Ames/Eames and Priscilla Kimball. John was the son of Robert Eames 1640-1693 and his wife Rebeckah Blake who both survived the Salem Trials. Information about this line can be found in Wilmot Spofford Ames' 1943 book ROBERT EAMES [AMES] 1640 - 1693 of ANDOVER AND BOXFORD MASSACHUSETTS. Phineas founded Amesville and sold it to Sanger, giving permission to change the name to Sangerville. Phineas is my 4th great grandfather through his son, Daniel's line.
