William Pitt Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst, GCH, PC (14 January 1773 – 13 March 1857) was a British diplomat and colonial administrator. He was the son of Lt.-Gen. William Amherst and Elizabeth Paterson. He m.(1) Hon. Sarah Archer, daughter of Andrew Archer, 2nd Lord Archer, Baron of Umberslade and Sarah West, on 24 July 1800 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square, London, England and (2) Lady Mary Sackville, daughter of John Frederick Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset and Arabella Diana Cope, on 25 May 1839 at Knole, Kent, England.
He matriculated Christ Church Oxford, BA 1793, MA 1797. He succeeded his uncle as 2nd Baron Amherst of Montreal, Kent [G.B., 1788] on 3 August 1797. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 30 December 1815. He was created 1st Earl Amherst of Arracan, in the East Indies [U.K.] on 19 December 1826. He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.) in 1834.
He died on 13 March 1857 at age 84 at Knole House, buried at Church of Sevenoaks, Sevenoaks, Kent, England.
