Biography

Alice was born on 24 Feb 1780[1] in Rogersville, Hawkins County, Tennessee.[2] However, it is more likely that she was actually born in North Carolina, since her father may not have moved to the area that would later become Rogersville until a few years later.

In 1818, she received a legacy of $1 in the will of her step-mother, Lucy Amis.[3]

She and her husband moved to western Tennessee by 1801, when John Gordon was said to have founded the town of Gordonsville, Smith County, Tennessee. See discussion on the profile page of John Gordon.

She died in 1864 and was buried in Bowen Cemetery in Gordonsville, Smith County, Tennessee.[4]

  1. A family bible record submitted to the Family Search website includes an entry for Alice Amis and lists her date of birth as 24 February, but states that it took place in the year "1790." This is almost certainly a transcriber's error. Alice's mother, Alice (Gale) Amis died around 1784, so Alice's year of birth was more likely "1780," as noted here from the DAR record. See: Family Search > Memories (https://www.familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/141656696). The submitted image includes some provenance for this data, which appears to be from a book of bible records. While there is no citation for that book, the underlying references accompanying the image may be worth checking out.
