Biography

Private Albert Ammerman served in the Kentucky Militia in the War of 1812
Service started: 15 Aug 1812
Unit(s): Captain Michael Glaves Company, 1st Regiment
Service ended:

Albert was the son of John Ammerman and Elizabeth Hibler who had moved from New Jersey to Washington County, Maryland shortly before his birth around 1791.[1][2] Census records for some of his children says he was born in Kentucky but are likely incorrect.[3][4][5]

Albert served in in the War of 1812 in Capt. Michael Glave’s company, 1st Regiment Infantry, Kentucky Volunteer Militia.[6] He was wounded in the Battle of River Raisin[7][8] in Michigan Territory on 18 Jan 1813 during a brief skirmish where the Americans drove the British and their Indian allies out of Frenchtown. A lead ball penetrated his leg muscles and lodged against his femur and he was taken prisoner. He was witness to part of the River Raisin Massacre on 23 Jan where many dozens of his fellow Kentuckians who had been wounded were slaughtered by the Indians. His complete sworn statement, made on 21 Apr 1813:[9][1]

"Albert got a half-disability from the government. Albert filed for a pension before Martin Fugate, Justice of the Peace, of Pendleton County, Kentucky, and certified by Michael Glaves on 15 May 1820 and he was placed on the pension rolls 30 Nov 1820. Albert got an annual allowance of $48.00, sums received were $662.66, since 1820."[1][10][11][12][13][14]

Married Polly Owens on 13 May 1813 in Pendleton Co. by Rev. David Robinson in the Methodist Church.[15]

"In May 1815, Albert was appointed surveyor of Broadford Road, in Pendleton County, Kentucky...In May 1832, Albert was again appointed Surveyor of Roads. His crew consisted of Isaac, Charles and John Owens; Thomas T. Glaves; John, James and Philip Ammerman."[1] Also John Humphreys, Charles Dance, Harrison Johnson, Martin McClain, Robert Lancaster, Thomas and James Braun, Ignatius Stowers, John Myers, Henry Asberry, and Michael Myers.[16] (Note: Isaac Owens was the brother of his wife, Polly, and was married to Albert's sister Sarah/Sally. They moved to Illinois with the families of Albert, George, and James Ammerman.)[2]

On 22 Jan 1830, Albert Ammerman, James Ammerman, and Leonard Highfill [husband of Elizabeth Ammerman] sold land on the north side of "the South Fork of Licking" to Charles Dauce for $25. It was land that they had inherited from John Ammerman and they were each entitled to one eleventh of 194 acres upon the death of John's widow, Elizabeth. [17]

In 1830, Albert brought suit against John R. Hand in Pendleton Co. and lost the case in a jury trial.[18]

In Sep 1835, he moved to Adams County, Illinois and had his pension transferred there on 5 Nov 1837. The reason he gave for moving was "a desire to make better provision for his family than he could in Kentucky where good land was too high for him to purchase."[19][20][21] On 23 Aug 1839, Albert served on a jury in a civil case appeal of William John Pickett vs. Lawrence Hadley in Adams Co.[22] He is living there as a pensioner in 1840.[2][23][24][25]

Albert Ammerman received a "Last Payment Voucher" for his military pension in the first quarter of 1846 in the state of Illinois.[30] Albert followed his daughter Matilda to Scotland County, Missouri. In the 30 Jun 1846 court term, his widow Mary Ammerman, as administrator of Albert's estate, presented an inventory and appraisement of the estate. The court granted the remaining estate to her.[31]

Research Notes

A request was made to the Missouri State Archives to search for a will in Scotland Co. In an email message to Kerry Larson on 6 Oct 2021, they wrote, "This is regarding your request for the Scotland County will of Albert Ammerman – we were unable to find a will for Albert Ammerman in the Scotland County Wills (C6390, C43986)."

A Joseph Ammerman filed for a land patent on 1 Jul 1854 in Lewis Co., Missouri. He was described as a minor child of the War of 1812 veteran, Albert Ammerman, from Capt. Coleman's company.[32] However, there is only one 5-10 y/o son listed in the 1840 census and both Thomas and Joseph fit that category. It appears that some subterfuge may have been involved here as Joseph was more likely the son of Coleman Reed Ammerman of Lewis County, a distant cousin of Albert's.

I sought to order Albert's final payment voucher, not just the index record, from the National Archives. I received this response: "Final Pension Payment Vouchers are arranged by the State in which the veteran was living at the time of his death, thereunder alphabetically by name of pensioner. Vouchers for the States of Delaware and Georgia have been digitized in full and are available online at www.Fold3.com.

Vouchers for all other States are currently closed for research, as they are being digitized by the National Archives. The Vouchers will be uploaded to the National Archives Catalog as each State is completed. We do not currently have a time frame for completion of this project."
