Enlisted, October 6, 1913, in Troop B, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City. Dropped, July 31, 1914 and taken up, March 20, 1916. He mustered in with Troop B, Squadron A Cavalry, for service on the Mexican border, June 30, 1916. Squadron A was assigned to Vamp McAllen , Texas with the 6th NY Division ( later to be the 28th Division ). Squadron A returned to New York and mustered out of border service, December 28, 1916.
His brother john Forbes Amory was a member of Squadron A, 1924- 1925.
World War 1, He attended the first OTC Class at Plattsburg Barracks, NY, and commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, Cavalry, August 16, 1917. He was assigned to the 27th Division at Camp Wadsworth, SC, then to the War Risk Section, Adjutant General Department. He sailed for France December 11, 1917 and transferred in France to the Liaison Service, AEF, He saw combat when transferred to the 5th Machine Gun Battalion, 2nd Division.
After the war he was attached to the American Commission to Negotiate peace then detailed to the Russian Field Mission.
He returned to the States aboard the USAT Northern Pacific, from Brest France, August 5, 1919, docking at Hoboken, NJ, August 12, 1919. He was discharged August 30, 1919.

He married Ethel (Cummings) Forbes in January of 1944 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[1][2]
