Biography

Cross of St George
George Amos was born in England.
(Clicking on a link for a census year will lead to a transcription of that census record.)

George Amos was born in West Langdon, Kent, England, and baptized in the parish of Guston on 22 May 1853. His parents were Abraham Amos and Isabella Cock.[1] He appeared with them and his older siblings in the 1861 census, residing in Martin, East Langdon, Kent.[2]

At some point, he moved to Essex county. He married Elizabeth Filby on 7 Nov 1875 in Christ Church, Southwark, London.[3] They settled down at the Creeksea (Cricksea) Ferry on the River Crouch in Essex, where George served as a ferryman and publican.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] The couple had nine children:

Arthur Thomas (1878-1941)[11]
Isabella (1880- )[12]
Flora (1881-1973)[13]
Minnie (1883-1970)
Frank (1886- )[14]
Alice Mary (1889-1961)[15]
Grace Maud (1891-1965)[16]
May (1893-1977)[17]
Elsie Ellen (1895-1972)

The family appeared in the 1881 census at the Ferry House on Wallasea Island. Also living with them was his wife's niece, Esther Filby. (She was the daughter of Elizabeth's brother Joseph). In this census, George's occupation was recorded as "Ferryman Waterman."[4]

In December of 1887, George suffered an accident, which was written up in the local paper:

ACCIDENT.--On Friday evening, the 16th inst., George Amos, a ferryman, was about to get his boat, to return to his home at Cricksea Ferry, when he fell over the Quay, owing to the intense darkness. His wife becoming alarmed at his absence, caused search to be made, and he was found below the Quay, his head and back being much injured. Mr. C. F. Downman, surgeon, at once directed the removal of the poor fellow to his home and accompanied him thither. Amos now lies in a precarious state.[5]

He must have sufficiently recovered from his injuries, because he continued to work as a ferryman, and took on the additional responsibilities of a publican. The temporary license of the Ferry Boat Inn was transferred to him on 31 July 1889.[18]

Both of these occupations, ferryman and publican, were reported in the 1891 census. The family continued to reside on Wallasea Island, in the Ferry Boat cottage on Cricksea Ferry Rd. Esther Filby no longer appeared in the household, but Elizabeth's family was represented by her mother, Mary A. Filby. The Amos family also employed a 14-year-old domestic servant named Alice Mashel.[6]

By 1901, the eldest children had moved out of the household, and the domestic servant was replaced by the family's remaining elder daughters, Flora and Minnie. The son Frank worked as their page boy. There was also a boarder, Arthur Alfred Crisp, who worked as a "Barge Ferryman on River."[8]

George retired from the Creeksea (Cricksea) Ferry sometime between the 1901 census and the 1911 census, and moved with his wife and two youngest daughters to South Fambridge.[8][9] He was still residing there at the time of his death on 3 May 1931.[10]

Question of Parentage

A number of online trees regarding this individual give his parents as Edward Amos and Sarah Constable. I suspect that this originated in my tentatively putting them as his parents in my Ancestry tree without a clear notation that it was tentative. Further research has convinced me that his parents are, in fact, Abraham Amos and Isabella Cock.

Both possible parental couples had a son named George of the right age, and born in the county of Kent. However, the marriage record of George Amos to Elizabeth Filby names Abraham Amos as the groom's father.[3] Furthermore, the George Amos born to Edward Amos and Sarah Constable was baptized in Buckland, Kent, England,[19] whereas the George Amos born to Abraham Amos and Isabella Cock was baptized in St. Martin, Kent, England.[20] In the 1911 census, the birthplace of the George Amos who is the subject of this biography is written as "Martin, Kent."[9]

Note also, sometimes his name appears in other online trees as "George Hammond Amos." That is the name under which the son of Edward Amos and Sarah Constable was baptized, and is therefore not the true name of this George Amos. No record has thus far been found indicating a middle name for this George Amos.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with George by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with George:
