Mary Ann Amos the eldest daughter of William Amos and Elizabeth Blanch was born in September 1841 at Butterwick in the Hunter River region of New South Wales, Australia.
She married local builder George James Cook in 1864 in Grafton New South Wales. They went on to have at least 9 children before George's death in 1906.
Mary Ann Cook was a successful businesswoman and landowner in the Grafton district. She and George between them owned and were liquor licence holders of the Wattle Tree Hotel in Pound Street, Grafton. She fought stubbornly for years to gain the publican's licence in her own name, after George sued for bankruptcy in the late 1870s. A test case for married women in this period.
She outlived the poor unfortunate George by nearly 30 years and passed away herself on Christmas Day in 1934. She left behind one son and seven daughters and is buried at the Grafton General Cemetery, Villiers Street, Grafton, New South Wales, Australia.
