Biography

Joseph Jenkins Van Buren's father-in-law, Richard Amos acquired his portion of Greenwich Village from a relative named Christopher Amos, Who was somehow tied into the family of Admiral Sir Peter Warren.

Warren died in 1752 and the Amoses didn't buy the land until shortly after the revolution, as Warren's daughters divested themselves of Warren's considerable American Holdings.

"The Amos farm" encompassed four full city blocks of Greenwich Village. It was :just over the wall: from St. Luke's church that still stands today

Both Charles and Christopher streets are named after Christopher Amos (With Charles being his middle name), and what is now W. 10th St. was, at one time, named Amos Street, after Richard Amos.

"Richard Amos' obituary identifies him as a 'Revolutionary War hero,' and he was a major landholder and early real estate developer in Greenwich Village. His lifelong friend, George Higday (or Higbee) is a confirmed member of General Washington's Culper Ring [1], whose wife turned Elizabeth Burgin (long suspected to be the Culper Ring's "Agent 355") in, after Higday had been arrested by British troops based upon intercepted correspondence from Washington naming him as a spy.

All three of them, Amos, Burgin, and Higday, were neighbors in Greenwich Village after the war and all were represented by Aaron Burr in a lawsuit against the Church of St. Luke, over land. Because of these connections to known and suspected Culper spies, it has been theorized that Amos may have been a minor player in the Ring as well." (Marty Van Buren {2018}) ~ references to RA's involvement in the Revolution need to be cited... {curator note: MMvB 2017}[1]

This Richard Amos is a "junior," the son of Richard Amos and Elizabeth Ritter of Greenwich Village, NY.

I have plenty of citations over on Ancestry. You can access my tree here:

Search for Richard Amos (1760 - 1837).

There are extensive records and ongoing research as the elder Amos had multiple links to persons closely associated with General Washington's Culper spy ring. The evidentiary burden has not yet been met to unequivocally state that he was an as yet unnamed Culper, but significant circumstantial evidence points to it.

You will find this Richard Amos and his wife on the elder's will.

Unfortunately, the names of the elder Richard Amos and Elizabeth Ritter parents are currently unknown.
