John Amos was born in Scotland.

John Amos was born on 4 January 1806, the son of Mary Amos and Adam Amos.[1]

"The Amos family arrived in Tasmania in March 1821 aboard the Emerald, and were advised to look for land on the unsettled east coast."[2]

He married Elizabeth Hepburn on 8 March 1833 at Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.[3] Their children were:[1]

John died on 22 April 1880 in Cranbrook, Tasmania.[1]

MARRIED at St. David’s Church, Hobart town, by the Rev. Wm. Bedford, this morning, Elizabeth eldest daughter of Robert Hepburn, Esq. of Roy’s hill [St Pauls], to Mr. John Amos, second son of Mr. Adam Amos, Glengala, Great Swan Port. (Hobart Town Courier 8 Mar 1833)

“John arrived in Van Diemen’s Land with his parents in 1821 and accompanied them when they moved to the East Coast. There he inherited the property Glen Heriot and became a farmer of note. He was one of the first Councillors for Glamorgan, being elected 29 February 1860. This was the first rural council set up in Tasmania. He was a Councillor for many years, and was acting Warden on occasions when Warden Graham was absent fom the district. He supervised construction of the Council Chambers and he was in charge of the erection of a police building at Bicheno. He was elected president of the local Agricultural Society and he took a great interest in other aspects of community life. Elizabeth arrived with her family on the “Greenoch” in 1828.”
