Biography

Elmer Amos was born September 1863 in Ohio.[1]

He might be the Elmer Amos, in Newport, Washington Co., Ohio, in the 1880 census, son of James and Mary.[2]

He married 1 April 1886[3] Laura F. Racer,[4] born Sept 1865 in Ohio.[5][6]

In 1900, they lived in District 0117, Little Muskingum , Washington Co., Ohio, where Elmer is listed as a day laborer.[7]

By 1910, they'd moved to Ward 2, Tulsa, Oklahoma where Elmer and Laura were living along with their single son, Arthur, age 21. Elmer worked as a driller at an oil well.[8]

In 1920, still in Tulsa, Elmer E. Amos, 56, "single" [sic] and roomer, still working as a driller for an oil company.[9]

Of interest, one Laura F. Amos, "widowed," born right time and place, is boarding in Alhambra, LA County, California, in 1920.[10]

It looks like he moved to California by 1925 where we find the marriage of Elmer E. Amos "of Tulsa" to Dollie B. Reed on 17 Nov 1925 in Los Angeles.[11]

But the marriage was dissolved by 1930, where he is probably the divorced Elmer E. Amos living in the Pacific Branch National Military Home in Los Angeles, California.[12] There is no entry in the California Divorce Index.

If so, he may be the Elmer E. Amos who died in Los Angeles, California 16 August 1943.[13]

The gravestone for this Elmer indicates he served as Private in 7 Ohio Infantry.[14] A service record indicates the war was the Spanish-American War.[15]

In 1940, one Elmer E. Amos, right age and birth place, is living in Los Angeles, California, with a wife Florence, age 70, and son Arthur.[16] Third wife?

BUT the same 1940 census, has a divorced Elmer E. Amos, also right age and birth place, living in Assembly District 61 of Los Angeles.[17] This suggests the possibility of two different men? We need to be cautious.

Children

The following is from the 1900 census; there may have been more:

  1. Arthur Amos, b Sept 1888 Kansas; still single in 1910. Possibly remained single; evidence he is living with his father in 1940 in Los Angeles.
  2. Albert Amos, b May 1892 Ohio; not with them in 1910. Married 27 Oct 1919 Addie R. [McCarroll] Frans in Orange, California, dau of Wm Mc Carroll and Kathern Douge.[18]

There is some evidence in the 1920 census that suggests both Albert and Arthur may have moved to California. But it's not yet proven they are the same people as the sons above.

The wikitree profiles linked as children of Elmer use the mother's maiden name Racer instead of Amos for Arthur and Albert.
