Eliza Amos was born 16 September 1833 and baptised at Belchamp St Paul on 1 December 1833. She was the daughter of publican John Amos and Eliza Stuck.[1]
In 1841, she was recorded with her parents and three younger siblings at the 'Half Moon' in Belchamp St Paul, Essex. Her father was recorded as a publican.[2]
In 1851, Eliza was recorded in the home of her grandmother, Sarah Ames/Amos - Butler's Farm, Belchamp St Paul, Essex.[3]
In 1861, Eliza was recorded as a dressmaker living at 36 St John's Street in Colchester.[4]
In 1881, Eliza was unmarried and residing with her 75-year-old mother in West Mersea, Essex. Her mother was described as a shopkeeper and they lived near Yew Tree House.[5]
In 1891, Eliza was a dressmaker, still residing with her elderly mother near Yew Tree House in West Mersea, Essex. They were recorded as living in a shop and also had lodgers - William & Martha Stokes, and their two young children.[6]
After Eliza's mother died, she lived alone near the church in West Mersea. It appears Eliza and her mother remained very close throughout the course of their lives. [7]
