Biography

John Amos was born on 16 July 1665 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony. His parents were Hugh and Anna (Unknown) Amos[1]. He was baptized in the Boston Second Church in June 1666[2]

The Amos family was in Norwich, New London, Connecticut by 1677, and in Preston, New London, Connecticut in 1686. John married there, in April 1694, Sarah Morgan, daughter of John and Rachel (Deming) Morgan[3].

John and Sarah had children, all born in Preston[4]

  1. John, born 29 August 1697
  2. William, born at 12 August 1700, married Sarah Millington
  3. Sary, born 30 June 1703
  4. Margaret, born 6 September 1708, married Ephraim Jones
  5. Esther, born 16 April 1711, married Ebenezer Leonard
  6. Hannah (transcribed as Ames, born 18 Feb 1714/5; died 1 Sept 1717

In 1709 John brought a lawsuit against Henry Stevens, claiming that Henry was living on property that John and his father Hugh had bought from Owaneco in 1693. A jury did not find the Indian deed valid, so found for the defendant.[5]

The death of John's wife Sarah is recorded in the town records without a readable date. John died on 22 January 1758[4]. The town record says at age 101, but John died at 92 years of age.
