Mr H. Y. Widdowson., S-M. ,as coroner, held an inquest on the 20th at Nurse Thompson's Hospital on the body of a man named Herbert Oscar Amos, 43 years of age, a boot salesman, living at Ashburton, who died at noon the same day, following an operation. The evidence disclosed the fact that some years ago the deceased (who leaves a wife and six children) was struck on the chin by a cricket ball. A cancerous growth developed, and four years ago his chin was removed. This, however, failed to stay the progress of the disease, which developed in his mouth and extended to the throat. It was recognised that deceased's only chance of life was a very serious operation, and that, considering his extremely weak condition, there was a grave danger of a fatal result. Deceased and his relatives were informed of this, and they decided in favour of the operation. This was performed yesterday morning by Dr Pickerill, the deceased being on the operating table for two hours and a half. Dr Marshall acted as anaesthetist, and adopted the usual methods, beginning with a compound of chloroform and ether, to induce anaesthesia, and thereafter using warmed ether vapour. Dr Pickerill stated that deceased stood the operation well, and was showing signs of recovering from the anaesthetic when the pulse began to weaken rapidly. and despite all their efforts (by injection of stimulants, artificial -respiration and heart massage), ultimately gave out altogether. He did not think the anaesthetic had anything whatever to do with the cause of death, which was due to shock following an extremely severe operation on a man in a very weak condition. Mr Widdowson recorded a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony [4]
