Biography

Archibald Drakeford Cradock Amos was born on 19 Aug 1869 in London, Middlesex, England to James Amos and Frances Karr (Snape) Amos. His birth was registered in St George Southwark, London in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Snape.[1]

In 1871 Archibald D R Amos (age 1) lived in St George the Martyr, London with his father James (42, Clergy), mother Frances K (42), and five siblings: Andrew (7), Ada F (6), Herbert G M (4), James P L (2), and Margaret C A L (0), as well as five servants: Elizabeth Laycock (49, Cook), Hannah B Collins (35, Nurse), Thirza Messenger (18, Housemaid), Martha Tribe (14, Assistant Nurse), and Elizabeth Collins (63, Monthly Nurse).[2]

Archibald's mother Frances Carr Amos passed away in 1873, and his father married the widow Anne Elizabeth (Fisher) Pike in 1875.

In 1881 Archibald D C Amos (age 11, Scholar) was a boarder at ?? House, High Street in Stevenage, Hertfordshire.[3] His father, stepmother, youngest sister, and stepsiblings lived at Bateman St in Cambridge [at Paston House, 46 Bateman St].

Archibald Drakeford Cradock Amos, son of James, was admitted at Queen's College, Cambridge University in 1888. He had previously attended Trent College [a boarding school for 11-18 year olds]. He matriculated at Michaelmas 1888; Exhibitioner; Scholar, 1889; Prizeman; Obtained a B.A. in 1891 and an M.A. in 1895; A Master at the Royal Academy, Gosport, for one year; Assistant Master at Derby School 1894-1903; Joint Head Master of a private school at St Leonard's, Sussex 1904; Author, Translations (Latin & Greek classics).[4]

In 1891 Archibald Amos (age 21, Scholar) was staying at College Terrace in Brighton, Sussex with his father James (62, Clerk in Holy Orders), sister Margaret (20), and servant Hannah Collins (55, House Keeper).[5] His stepmother and stepsiblings were at Bateman St in Cambridge.

In 1901 Archibald D C Amos (age 31, Assist Master) lived in Derby, Derbyshire [Assistant Master at Derby School, a grammar school for boys].[6]

Archibald Drakeford Cradock Amos, son of James Amos, married Florence Ada Leacroft, daughter of John William Leacroft, on 12 Apr 1904 at St James, Derby.[7]

Archibald and Florence had two daughters:

  1. Elaine Phyllis (Amos) Lunt (1906-1985)
  2. Isobel Mary Amos (1909-1996)

In 1911 Archibald D C Amos (age 41, Inspector of Primary Schools for Birmingham Education Committee) lived at 19 Montague Road in Edgbaston, Worcestershire with his wife Florence A (28) and two daughters: Elaine Phyllis (4) and Isabel Mary (1), as well as visitor Arthur Harvey Dixon (35, Surgeon Dentist) and two servants: Jane Shaw (25, Nurse/Housemaid) and Caroline Parsons (29, Cook).[8]

Archibald D C Amos passed away on 13 Dec 1943, aged 74 years. His death was registered in Caernarvon, Caernarvonshire, Wales in the last quarter of the year.[9]
