Biography

Alva was born in 1879 in Indiana. He was the son of John Amy and Mary Wolfe[1]

In 1900, he is living with his parents and three brothers in Scott Township, Harrison County, Indiana and is listed as working as a Day Laborer.[2]

He married Alda Lou Rainbolt on June 2, 1902 in Harrison County, Indiana.[3]

He registered for the draft for World War I in September of 1918 (making his mark instead of signing his name). He listed himself as a Laborer and Timber Cutter. He is described as being of medium height with a slender build, blue eyes, and black hair.[4]

In 1922, he was divorced from Alda and married Viola Adeline Sampson. It was his second marriage and her fourth marriage.[5]

He passed away in Corydon, Harrison County, Indiana on May 1, 1955 and is buried in the Jordan Cemetery in Corydon.[6]

Birth Date

The picture of his gravestone on his FindAGrave memorial indicates he was born in 1881 and the memorial lists the date as May 6, 1881.

There are two very good reasons this is an error. First, he is listed as being one year old in the 1880 Census. Second, his birth date is listed as May 16, 1879 on his World War I Registration Card.

I have chosen to use the date listed on the WWI Registration Card.

Research Notes

The information imported from the original gedcom file indicated he was a furniture maker. That was never an occupation listed on the Census - but it is very possible it was a hobby of his.

1930 Census - First Wife Alta Amy is living in New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana with their children.[7] She is listed as widowed - which at the time it was common for divorced women to list themselves as widowed instead of divorced.
