Spencer was born December 5, 1921 in Peterborough, Ontario, where he lived his early life. He was the son of Dr. Charles Hewitt Amys and Mary Elizabeth (Lipsett) Amys of Peterborough.
He attended Peterborough Collegiate at the time he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on Nov 5, 1941 in Toronto.
He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.[1]
In 1943, he was attached to the 22nd Overseas Training Unit, a unit formed in April 1941 at RAF Wellesbourne Mountford to train night bomber crews on Vickers Wellington bomber aircraft.[2] On Feb 13 of that year, he was piloting a Wellington III with 8 other military personnel onboard when it was lost in a crash. All were interred at Stratford-Upon-Avon Cemetery, Warwickshire, United Kingdom. He was barely 21 years of age.[3][1][4][5]
