Biography

Elizabeth Florence (Andrews) Carter was born on the 15th of March 1898 in the Green River Township of Henderson County. She had a twin sister named Mary Ellen Andrews along with three other sisters and three brothers. My grandmother liked being called "Lizzie"

Lizzie married William Elbert Carter about 1916 in Greenville SC in 1916. Lizzie and William had at least eight children together. Their first two children Mary Ella Carter and Albert Carter died very young. Mary Ella was not yet two years old. Albert died at age six. Lois Carter was my mother and my grandparents fifth child.

True to their time my grandparents lived and worked on farms and textiles. Mills in Woodruff, Chick Springs, Beaumont are some of the Mills I know they worked at during their lives.

My Grandmother Lizzie was a short petite lady which is funny because her husband William my Grandfather was very tall at least 6'4" and slender. I remember visiting some of my Grandmothers relatives on their farm one weekend back in the late 50's. Lizzie would jump out of the car and run to the barn and start petting and talking to an old cow they called Bessie. Lizzie would feed that cow and sit down and start milking her like she had never left the farm. All my ancestors came from farms but my Grandmother Lizzie was by far the best at it. She could milk cows, prepare chicken from yard to plate, gather eggs, tend stock and garden with the best of them. Lizzie was a good ole country girl!
